The Washington State Board of Education has awarded the Washington State Achievement Award in Mathematics to Cascade View Elementary for 2012. The award is presented to schools based on student achievement on the statewide math test for the last two years. This year only 21 elementary schools throughout the state received this award. Seven 4th and 5th grade students from Tukwila's Thorndyke Elementary School competed in the Global Reading Challenge, sponsored and organized by the King County Library System (KCLS). Students must read 10 books selected by the KCLS and then answer questions on the books in a competition format with teams of students from other schools. The Tukwila School District has partnered with the Technology Access Foundation (TAF) to offer an after school robotics program for students at Showalter Middle School. The program started in January and now has 20 students enrolled. The Tukwila School District is part of a consortium of school districts in South King County that has received a $460,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help improve the career and college readiness of ELL students.
