Building a better community every day!

It has been a busy few days. Here are some of the events that I attended:
Last week: Open House re: 17 story building possibility - nothing more than what I described in a previous post. Drawings, at this point, are just concept drawings.
Monday - Community Affairs and Parks committee - very interesting discussion about current regulation on ADU or accessory dwelling units. Tukwila does not allow for DADU or detached accessory dwelling units.
Monday - City Council meeting - listen to the audio. Very good discussion on the proposed 17 story building. There was a pretty juicy discussion in reports, miscellaneous. Dennis Robertson very unhappy with how the administration handled a particular matter called the Briscoe/DeSimone levee. The mayor signed a memo in support of the Kent position on this project without consulting the council. The question: Should he have consulted the council? I don't know for sure. Do a google search for more information. I encourage one to listen to the audio.
Tuesday - Transportation committee meeting - interesting discussion on a safe route to school project to Cascade View going between the church and cemetery.
Tuesday - school board meeting, no fireworks of the type that you might have expected given all that is going on. Very interesting discussion about the different kinds of legislation being proposed in Olympia given the McCleary decision by the state Supreme Court.

Chuck,
I'm curious about the DADU discussion, are they considering revising code?

The agenda indicated that they were simply going to discuss current regulation. Probably a citizen asked about it and one of the council members asked for a review of current regulation. There are no plans for change at the moment. There may be some interest in the near future as revised comp plans are discussed. I plan to follow this issue and maybe get involved. Councilmember Kruller's initial but rather strongly stated opinion was that there should be no DADU allowed except as a variance. She has an extreme example to share. However, one super-bad experience should not be the main criteria for a strong position. Sharon Mann, visited the meeting just like I did. She was also against DADU but open to a creative suggestion by Council Ekberg that I won't go into right now because the question is really not on the table. Seattle allows DADUs. I am getting a copy of those Seattle regs to review. It would be interesting to know what their experience is. What problems did they anticipate? Did the problems come about? What other challenges came up? This is a bit down the road though. At the moment, I am kind of in favor, subject to change with more information, of allowing DADU's if the regulations can address really bad abuses of the system and, at the same time, allow the least restrictive environment for property owners.
