Building a better community every day!
There has been a waiting list in the Tukwila School District to get into preschool programs. The district currently runs a state funded program called ECEAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program). The program provides preschool programs for 4 year olds who meet low income requirements. There are 36 slots available at Thorndyke and 36 slots available at Cascade View. Starting in the fall the Tukwila School District will partner with a local non-profit, the Community Schools Collaboration (CSC), and the local Educational Service District (ESD) to make available a Headstart preschool program at Tukwila Elementary. The Tukwila School District will provide the space, the CSC will provide the staff and determine which students are accepted and the ESD will provide program oversight and management. Headstart is a federally funded preschool program for 3 and 4 year olds who meet low income requirements. There will be 36 slots available in this program at Tukwila Elementary to any resident of the Tukwila School District who has preschool children. These new preschool slots will make a significant decrease in the district’s preschool waiting list. Preschool programs can provide significant improvement in student academic achievement in the early grades.
